At the start of the year, we made four bold bets for AI. Here’s how they played out:

At the dawn of 2024, we made four bold predictions about the trajectory of artificial intelligence. As the year unfolded, these forecasts revealed varying levels of success, showcasing the complex and rapid evolution of the AI landscape.

1. Multimodal Chatbots
This prediction was a resounding success. The debut of OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google DeepMind’s Gemini highlighted the potential of multimodal AI systems. These advanced models can seamlessly process and generate not just text, but also images and audio. Their capabilities redefined what chatbots can achieve, enabling applications in customer support, content creation, education, and more. From AI-powered tutors to creative design assistants, multimodal chatbots have unlocked new dimensions of interactivity and utility, setting a new standard for what’s possible in AI communication.

2. Tougher AI Regulations:
Our second bet was on a global push for stricter AI governance, and 2023 didn’t disappoint. The European Union finalized the much-anticipated AI Act, setting stringent guidelines for the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies. In the United States, President Biden’s executive order outlined measures to ensure transparency, accountability, and safety in AI systems. These regulatory frameworks underscore the growing recognition of AI’s societal impact and the need to safeguard against its risks, from biased decision-making to unchecked surveillance.

3. Open-Source vs. Big Tech:
Here, the outcome was more nuanced. Open-source AI flourished, with innovative models and tools emerging from startups and collaborative projects. Yet, Big Tech players like OpenAI and Google DeepMind continued to dominate the narrative, leveraging their vast resources to maintain a competitive edge. The open-source community made significant strides in democratizing AI access and innovation, but the power balance still heavily tilts toward tech giants. The interplay between these forces remains a crucial area to watch as we enter 2024.

4. AI in Pharma:
While the promise of AI revolutionizing pharmaceuticals is immense, it remains a work in progress. AI-driven drug discovery gained momentum in 2023, with companies leveraging machine learning to identify potential treatments faster and more efficiently. MHRA pilots ‘AI Airlock’ to accelerate healthcare adoption

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced the selection of five healthcare technologies for its ‘AI Airlock’ scheme. AI Airlock aims to refine the process of regulating AI-driven medical devices and help fast-track their safe introduction to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and patients in need.

Bangladesh, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, has seen a significant rise in some promising AI-based start-ups throughout the last few years. One of the first AI companies, Sigmund, is working on providing better security using AI-driven technologies.

Their creation ADAMS (Advanced Driver Assistance and Monitoring System) is used to alert drivers ahead of any potential danger.Socian is an AI-oriented social media platform. The company provides conversational AI-based solutions, NPL-based speech recognition, sentiment analysis, speech-to-text, chatbots, voice recognition and many more. What makes Socian unique from others is that they are the only analytics company to work with Bengali data.

Another amazing organisation is Ipage. It is an AI-based company working to improve the agricultural sector through AI-based technologies. Revenue from AI enterprise solutions is predicted to expand from USD 1.62 billion in 2018 to USD 31.2 billion in 2025, representing a 52.59 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Those growth areas include recognition software and tagging, patient data handling, global positioning system(GPS), predictive maintenance, methodologies and machine intelligence to predict and thwart potential threats, and many more.

However, AI companies have greater challenges ahead to make a firm position in the industry. Even if there are many opportunities, resizing the market would not be easy. As Bangladesh is not infrastructurally developed and there is an acute scarcity of skilled workforce, it is easy to conclude that we are not ready yet for the technological revolution.

Amid all these challenges, one good news is that the Bangladesh government and other private investors are working towards overcoming all these shortcomings. The government also has a planned approach towards developing AI infrastructure, training a skilled workforce and industrialisation of AI-based technology.

Bangladesh's population comprises 34 per cent of youth who are technology driven; therefore, the prevalence of AI companies in the IT industry may hold greater prospects for our country. In future, we can also dream of a country where our imagination can meet reality.

AI Efforts in Bangladesh: Progress So Far

The Healthcare sector, which has traditionally faced challenges such as inadequate funding and staffing levels can improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency through AI. By analyzing large datasets and identifying patterns that may be missed by human doctors, AI can augment critical services.. For instance, AI can help in the early detection of diseases like diabetes, heart attacks, and hypertension, prevalent in Bangladesh. AI-powered tools can also assist in managing patient data, predicting disease outbreaks, and personalizing treatment plans.

AI-driven solutions in agriculture can improve crop yields, pest control, and resource management. By leveraging AI technologies such as machine learning and computer vision, farmers can monitor crop health in real time, predict weather patterns, and optimize irrigation and fertilizer use. These technologies help in making data-driven decisions, reducing waste, and increasing productivity. For Bangladesh AI can augment farming practices and contribute to food security.

AI integration can increase the efficiency, quality, and consistency of manufactured products in Bangladesh. AI technologies like predictive maintenance, smart quality control, and optimized supply chains can automate production processes, reduce costs, and enhance production outcomes. Human-robot collaboration and generative product design further streamline operations, minimizing human error and maximizing efficiency. By adopting AI, Bangladeshi manufacturers can stay competitive in the global market and create a fully automated ecosystem. RMG manufacturing, which takes up around 80% of export revenue, is already transforming with AI integration. AI optimizes supply chain management by forecasting demand and improving inventory control thereby reducing wastage and cost. It also enables personalized design and shopping experiences by analyzing fashion trends and consumer preferences. Leading brands like Zara and H&M use AI to improve operational efficiency and responsiveness. Future prospects with AI in garments manufacturing include on-demand manufacturing, smart fabrics, and blockchain for ethical practices, positioning the industry for a tech-driven and sustainable future.

AI can automate manual processes such as bookkeeping and accounting, improve fraud detection, and upgrade credit management systems. AI can conduct swift analysis of large volumes of data to offer better-informed trading decisions, personalized banking services, and risk management solutions. The integration of AI in financial institutions in Bangladesh can further lead to improved customer service, reduced operational costs, and better financial inclusion. For example, Intelligent Machines (IM) is a leading AI company in Bangladesh dedicated to using AI capabilities to solve problems and drive efficiency across various sectors. IM has successfully implemented AI in different companies across telecom, financial institutions, and fast-moving consumer goods. Their AI-based services are reported to provide solutions with over 90% accuracy. What Are the Future Prospects of Artificial Intelligence in Bangladesh?
